Securing heterogeneous networks of Internet-of-Things devices

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is no longer a new term to many people. However, it is still gaining significant recognition in the community for its wide range of practical applications in several fields. In addition to the increased number of invented IoT applications, IoT core technologies grow excessively with several new proposed protocols, standards, and frameworks. However, this exponential growth also brings many related cyber-security threats. Being aware of these potential cyber risks, I have conducted a literature review on keeping the IoT environment safer and more secure. In the scope of this thesis, I summarize the IoT fundamental characteristics definition distinguishing it from other original networks. I propose a flexible and programmable IoT framework by systematically studying old but still valuable IoT architectures, protocols, security best practices, and recommendations proposed by leading organizations. My proposed framework offers security defense mechanisms for partly preventing some security problems as consequences of an original, trivial, but complicated IoT characteristic. The proposed framework consists of several IoT protocols integrating with various traditional network security mechanisms. I follow a based-architecture that allows to add more additional security mechanisms as updated features in the further framework released versions
