Individuals have separate identities for different areas of their life, such as work or school, and for different social contexts, such as being a leader or a spouse. These different identities and the relationships between the identities form an individual’s self-concept. Individuals strive for continuity and consistency within their identities and their self-concepts, which means that individuals make choices that are representative of their perceptions of self. The separate identities that people possess have been studied in their respective contexts, but current research on identities does not articulate what happens to these identities when individuals are forced to act against them.
