Lateral bracings must have adequate strength and stiffness. However, the design of steel compression members is generally based on simplified boundary conditions. Lateral braces are often designed only for the strength criteria. The objectives of this thesis are to study different existing methods for designing lateral braces inside steel frames, to evaluate their effectiveness through comparison to finite element method (FEM) and stability theory, and to propose design procedure if the simplified methods are unconservative.
