Art et pouvoir en Bulgarie médiévale : deuxième empire bulgare (1185-1396)

The present research deals with a problem of medieval Bulgarian history that has never been studied in detail. It is about the use of art by the Bulgarian Tsar for his politics, including representations, both visual and textual, of the sovereign. The objective of the research is to trace the evolution of the model image of the Bulgarian sovereign, presented in the various artistic media. Even more, the aim is to identify distinctly Bulgarian elements which could indicate whether an ethnic identity existed at that time. Thus, the work is constructed in four main parts. Chapter I. The Historical Background and Political Ideology of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396) is divided into two sub-sections. The first traces the main features of the history of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Emphasis is placed on the political and socio-cultural progress taking place in society and which play an important role in State policy: the restoration of the State, the official recognition of its status and that of its leader, the independence of the Bulgarian Church, the policy of matrimonial marriages, etc. The aim is to trace the evolution of the political idea in order to understand the context of the artistic production resulting from the order of the sovereign. Four major periods are to be noted in Bulgarian history which delimit the changes taking place in society: the period of the reestablishment of the state (1185 - 1241), the period of weakening (1241 - 1300), the period of heyday (1300 - 1371) and the period of decline (1371 - 1396). Artistic production depended largely on it since political changes determined its development.La recherche présente traite un problème de l’histoire bulgare médiévale qui n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une étude détaillée. Il s’agit de l’utilisation de l’art par le tsar bulgare pour sa politique, notamment les représentations, tant visuelles que textuelles, du souverain. L’objectif de la recherche est de retracer l’évolution de l’image-modèle du souverain bulgare, présenté dans les différents supports artistiques. Plus encore, le but est d’en identifier des éléments proprement bulgares qui pourraient indiquer si une identité ethnique existait à cette époque. Ainsi, le travail est construit en quatre grandes parties.Chapitre I. Le Contexte historique et l’idéologie politique du Deuxième Empire bulgare (1185-1396) est divisé en deux sous-parties. La première retrace les grands traits de l’histoire du Deuxième Empire bulgare. Un accent est posé sur les progrès politiques et socio-culturels qui s’opèrent dans la société et qui jouent un rôle important dans la politique de l’Etat : la restauration de l’Etat, la reconnaissance officielle de son statut et de celui de son chef, l’indépendance de l’Eglise bulgare, la politique des mariages matrimoniaux, etc. Le but est de retracer l’évolution de l’idée politique afin de comprendre le contexte de la production artistique issue de la commande du souverain. Quatre grandes périodes sont à noter dans l’histoire bulgare qui délimitent les changements s’opérant dans la société : la période du rétablissement de l’Etat (1185 - 1241), la période d’affaiblissement (1241 - 1300), la période d’apogée (1300 - 1371) et la période du déclin (1371 - 1396).
