According to the dual-process theory of emotions, an emotion can be processed explicitly and deliberately, or implicitly through automatic processes. Implicit and explicit emotional processes seem to rely on partly distinct cerebral networks. Several behavioral and neuroimaging studies suggest that these two types of processes could be differentially affected by normal aging. The goal of this research was to assess the differences in emotion processing between young (20 – 40 years old) and older adults (60 + years old), by taking into account the level of cognitive processing (controlled, automatic).
