Négation lexicale vs négation syntaxique en français et en grec moderne

This thesis attempts to approach, through a contrastive analysis, the notion of negation within two linguistic systems, the French and the Modern Greek, brought into contact through the process of translation. By comparing the translated corpora, we observe that during the transition from French to Greek, the translator opts for syntactic negation, while the original text proposes an affirmative sentence, including a term with negative semantism. The objective of this research is to highlight this tendency, and to propose a justification for this contrast between the syntactic negation on the one hand, frequently used in the translated Greek texts, and the lexical negation, which is often the choice of the French speaker expressing the negation on the other hand.The main hypothesis is that there are morphosyntactic reasons (properties of the lexemes examine), but also semantic and pragmatic, such as the semantism of French lexemes studied (little, without, refuse, forbid, etc.) and Greek (λίγο (ligho) ‘little’, χωρίς (xhoris) ‘without’, αρνούμαι (arnume) ‘refuse’, απαγορεύω (apaghorevo) ‘forbid’, etc.) which work as constraints for the translator. The theory adopted for this examination is that proposed by Guillemin-Flescher (1981), namely the work on a translated parallel corpus. The phenomenon of negation, being complex in itself, is treated within a varied theoretical framework. Thus, this approach is based on the following theories: the theory of argumentative scales of Anscombre et Ducrot (1978), that of conversational maxims of Grice (1979), and the theory of the notional domain of Culioli (1990). Our body of study consists of literary texts (novels), French written press translated into Greek (newspapers), official texts from the European Parliament appearing online in both languages, and a parallel French-Greek body (SOURCe).Cette thèse aborde la notion de la négation linguistique au moyen d’une analyse contrastive sur deux systèmes linguistiques, le français et le grec moderne, mis en contact grâce au processus de la traduction. En comparant des corpus traduits, on observe que lors du passage du français au grec, le traducteur opte pour la négation syntaxique, tandis que le texte original propose une phrase affirmative comportant un terme à sémantisme négatif. L’objectif de cette recherche est de mettre en évidence cette tendance, et de proposer une justification de ce contraste entre d’une part la négation syntaxique, fréquemment utilisée dans les textes traduits grecs, et d’autre part la négation lexicale, qui est très souvent le choix du locuteur français pour exprimer la négation. L’hypothèse principale est qu’il y a des raisons morphosyntaxiques (propriétés des lexèmes examinés) mais aussi sémantiques et pragmatiques, tels que le sémantisme des lexèmes français (peu, sans, refuser, interdire, etc.) et grecs (λίγο (ligho) ‘peu’, χωρίς (xhoris) ‘sans’, αρνούμαι (arnume) ‘refuser’, απαγορεύω (apaghorevo) ‘interdire’, etc.) étudiés qui fonctionnent en tant que contraintes pour le traducteur. La méthode de travail adoptée est celle proposée par Guillemin-Flescher (1981), à savoir le travail sur un corpus parallèle traduit. Le phénomène de la négation étant complexe en soi est traité dans un cadre théorique varié. La démarche suivie s’appuie sur les approches suivantes : la théorie des échelles argumentatives d’Anscombre et Ducrot (1978), celle des maximes conversationnelles de Grice (1979) et la théorie du domaine notionnel de Culioli (1990). Notre corpus d’étude est constitué de textes littéraires (romans), de la presse écrite française traduite en grec (journaux), de textes officiels du Parlement européen figurant en ligne dans les deux langues et d’un corpus parallèle français-grec (SOURCe)
