The Mediterranean has long been recognised as a global marine conservation priority. However, very little is known of its deep-sea environment, how it functions and how it is affected by the growing impact of humans. This vast area, which lies below 200 m, accounts for close to 78% of the Mediterranean Sea and it shelters a rich and fragile biodiversity. In recent years, scientists, with the aid of emerging technologies, have been exploring new regions and discovering new species which, in turn, has led to the realization that the deep- sea is home to ecosystems found nowhere else on the planet.
