Tubal factor is an important contributor to female infertility, and the current diagnostic approaches cannot correctly identify many subtle causes of tubal dysfunction. While it is known that the most common cause of tubal factor infertility is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), creating critical alterations of the tubal epithelium, little attention has been devoted to understanding the tubal modifications caused by the resident microbial population and their interaction with the surrounding tubal epithelium.
