Thermal properties and their influence on strength and deformability of calcareous rocks

Nella regione pugliese e lucana, le rocce carbonatiche (calcari, calcareniti e dolomie) sono state e vengono tuttora utilizzate con funzione portante oltre che decorativa, come materiale naturale da costruzione nella realizzazione di numerosi edifici e monumenti di interesse storico ed architettonico. Le variazioni diurne e stagionali di temperatura sulle superfici esterne di tali manufatti, generano deformazioni assolute e differenziali nelle diverse parti degli stessi, in relazione ai caratteri termici, tessiturali, al contenuto d’acqua ed alle condizioni di stato delle rocce impiegate. Dilatazione e contrazione termica, infatti, generano stati di tensione differenziale, che, nel tempo, determinano un decadimento delle caratteristiche di resistenza e di deformabilità della roccia e possono provocare disgregazione e distacchi nelle sue parti più esterne, facilitando l’azione biogena e chimica dell’ambiente. Tale azione è più evidente ed efficace nelle rocce porose e tenere, come il Tufo calcareo pugliese e la Pietra leccese, ma è anche sensibile su rocce tenaci e compatte come i calcari e le dolomie. In tale ottica sono stati, pertanto, analizzati i parametri termici di diversi campioni di calcarenite, di calcare e di dolomia, differenti per tessitura e porosità, al variare del contenuto d’acqua, per valutare entità ed effetti dello stress termico indotto.In the regions of Apulia and Basilicata, carbonate rocks (limestones, calcarenites and dolomites) have been and are still utilized, in a load bearing as well as decorative function, as natural construction material for the numerous buildings and monuments of historic and architectonic interest. The daily and seasonal temperature variations on the external surfaces of these constructions, in relation to the thermal and textural characteristics as well as the water content and the state of the rocks employed, produce absolute and differential deformations in the different parts of the construction. In fact, dilatation and thermal contraction create states of differential tension which, in time, determine a decay of the strength characteristics and deformability of the rocks. This can provoke disgregation and detachments on the more external parts thus facilitating the biogenic and chemical action of the environment. This action is more evident and effective in porous and soft rocks such as Apulian Tufo calcareo and Pietra leccese, but it is also considerable in hard and compact rocks such as limestones and dolomites. In this context, therefore, on various samples of calcarenite, limestone and dolomite of different texture and porosity, the thermal parameters were analysed, with the variation of water content, in order to evaluate the degree and effects of the thermal stress induced
