The Determinants of the Localization of Knowledge Spillovers

Chapter 6 presents new evidences on the localization of knowledge spillovers as proxied by patent citations for the North American and European regions. The econometric analysis investigates the simultaneous effect on the probability of being cited of both the geographical spatial distance and territorial borders at the country level, secondary and tertiary national level of aggregation, and cross-border neighbouring territorial units. Furthermore, the strength of the national legislation on patent protection is analysed as determinant of the localization of knowledge spillovers
