24 Standard Two and Three children were interviewed about their understanding of the reading process and each completed a Prose Inventory. The results were analysed to identify the relationship between their perception of the reading process and their oral reading performance. The findings indicated by the results suggested that the children with a well developedunderstanding of the reading process were able to direct their behaviour and call upon the appropriate strategies at the required time
