Objective: The purpose of the study was to elaborate theoretical and empirical well founded prevention of HIV infection among drug consuming women. Method: 146 heroine- and cocaine using women completed an interview about frequency of and cognitions preceding sexual risk behavior depending on their relationship with their sexual partners (i. e., steady partner, chance partner and prostitution). Results: In a period of six month, 47 of 146 illegal drug using women (32%) showed sexual risk behavior. Cognitions such as low self-efficacy in sexual situations, low importance of personal health and low outcome expectancy for HIV-protective behavior was associated with sexual risk behavior.
