Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause diseases ranging from mild diarrhea to fatal extra-intestinal hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Shiga toxin (Stx) is the key virulence factor in STEC, two Stx types (Stx1 and Stx2) and several subtypes varying in sequences, toxicity, and host specificity have been identified. Stx2l is a newly-designated subtype related to human disease but lacks thorough characterization.
