Potential migration of medical students with special regard to the influence of institutions versus family and other personal networks

International migration and recruitment of medical staff are receiving increasingly higher levels of attention. Especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, which broke out at the beginning of 2020, has brought attention to the global shortage of medical practitioners. Czechia has insufficient numbers of medical doctors and the country's age distribution for the profession is inadequate. Hence, within the Czech healthcare system, the migration of medical practitioners abroad is considered a relatively critical issue, particularly concerning young doctors and recent medical graduates. This diploma thesis examines the potential migration of medical students focusing on the influence of institutions as opposed to familial or other personal networks; these fulfil an important role in relation to the patterns of migration. The goal is to determine the probability of medical students' intention to migrate abroad for work. The thesis also aims to establish to what extent this migration is realistic. Part of the research focuses on the study of other selected characteristics, such as motives for leaving, length of migration, target destinations, or barriers that inhibit the move abroad.
