The paper considers several short works of prose writers, whose creative work (beside by H. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko’s one) formed the early stage of prose development in new Ukrainian literature. Most of these works are little known (M. Venger, Kh. Kupriyenko, M. Kostomarov) or practically unknown (P. Dovhonosenko, two stories by S. Karpenko). The researcher points out the traits that were distinguishing in comparison with H.
