Si celui-ci a généralement attiré plus l’attention des malacologues que des ornithologues ; ce sont pourtant ces derniers qui peuvent généralement apporter aux mieux des informations sur ce sujet méconnu. Le rôle que jouent les oiseaux dans ce processus permet d’expliquer de nombreux mystères concernant la colonisation de lieux normalement inatteignables pour ces mollusques : un étang isolé dans la campagne ou une lointaine île océanique. Il permet aussi de mieux comprendre la dispersion de certaines espèces de mollusques invasives, certains potentiellement vecteurs de parasites.
