Perbedaan Budaya dan Adaptasi Sosial Mahasiswa dalam Lingkungan Baru (Studi Fenomenologi Terhadap Kelembagaan Mahasiswa Sulawesi Selatan di Malang)

Introduction: Getting out of the confines of one's own culture means that individuals want to get out of their comfort zone. To be able to facilitate intercultural relations, individuals must be open-minded, accept positive external cultures and combine their own culture with other cultures. This study aims to find out how the cultural differences experienced by South Sulawesi students in the process of social adaptation. Methods: This study uses a phenomenological approach with qualitative methods. In the data collection, the researcher uses observation and interview techniques which were conducted on 6 students from South Sulawesi studying in Malang. This research is relevant to Schneider's theory of social adaptation in which there are criteria for good adjustment. In addition, to complete this research, it also uses the concept of culture in which there is an individual's ability to communicate in accordance with local cultural norms and values depending on the adjustment process of the newcomers. Result: The view of the differences between the original culture and Javanese culture is that the original culture is seen as louder and high-pitched than the Javanese culture which is considered more subtle, slow and polite so that in the process of adapting students to a new environment, the informant tried to overcome this reaction by increasing learning motivation which was the initial goal of choosing to study in Malang and taking advantage of social support from relatives and colleagues in the area. Conclusion: Each informant's social adaptation has a different process and not a few informants feel culture shock in the process. Cultural differences with the culture in the area of origin of the informants are very different so that not a few informants experience obstacles in adapting
