STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN STATISTICS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING COURSE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

Statistics is an important subject to teach students in college and to help them in conducting research. Many students in college had difficulties at the time of learning statistics and then this research was carried out because not much research on this topic was in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the problems and describe the solution to the problems faced by students in the statistics course. This study involved 40 students’ class of 2018 English Language Education Department of UMM as the participants. Questionnaires and interviews are used as research instruments to answer research problems. Based on the findings in this study, students face several problems in learning statistics courses, such as difficulty in understanding statistics materials and difficulty in understanding the explanations of the teacher in statistics. In addition, the findings in this study reveal that students can find solutions of each problem. The findings of the solution faced by students in this study are if students have difficulty understanding statistics, students will ask other students, and then if students are less motivated by statistics, students will blend in or join other students to be motivated. Therefore, these findings are directly proportional to the findings from previous studies, which stated that collaborating on statistics and English can build student cooperation so that students can communicate with each other and can improve students’ English skills
