Spaces of Initial Teacher Education

Initial teacher education (ITE) operates across several spaces including universities and schools. The disjuncture between these two spaces haslong been discussed in the literature with many criticisms mounted about the lack of integration between teacher education, schools and systems. As Ryan andBourke (2018) claim “not only are the physical spaces and infrastructure of schools different from that commonly found in universities, but also thepedagogies, ideologies and power dynamics are different and not necessarily compatible” (p.2). However, here we argue that the spaces between ITE and schools and where pre-service teacher education happens are narrower than onemay think. What follows are three examples where the roles of teacher educator and teacher combine to imagine possibilities for education in the future. We have referred to these as the three Ps – partnerships, professional learning and postgraduate qualifications
