50 Years of Title IX Panel Discussion

Presented online and in-person in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, Room 152 on September 9, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.Joeleen Akin is a member of the Georgia Tech Athletic Association’s executive leadership team, serves as the administrator for the Yellow Jackets’ women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, golf and softball programs and oversees Tech’s renowned Total Person Program.Bernadette V. McGlade is one of the most respected and experienced leaders in collegiate athletics. McGlade began working to shape the A-10 image and branding as one of the top 10 Division I conferences in the country. Prior to the ACC, McGlade served for 17 years at Georgia Tech. She was hired in 1981 at the age of 23 -- one of the youngest Division I head women's basketball coaches in the nation and the first full-time female coach at Georgia Tech.Monique Mead is an attorney at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP. She works in the Trademark and Copyright group, specializing in Trademark prosecution and enforcement. Mead was an undersized hitter on the right side for Georgia Institute of Technology’s volleyball team. She was named All-Atlantic Conference all four years at Georgia Tech and was named All-American.Kristi Miller-North is a Manager of Legal Services at Northside Hospital. Miller made collegiate tennis history in 2005 as Georgia Tech's first female All-American and was a winner of the 2005-06 Honda Sports Award. In 2006-07, she was a member of Georgia Tech's NCAA championship winning team.Jenny Lentz Moore became the first female F-35 civilian instructor pilot in 2017. She is currently the youngest and only female F-35 site lead and lead instructor pilot among all F-35 training facilities in the world. A member of both the track and field and swimming and diving teams while at Georgia Tech, Moore graduated in 2005 with a degree in aerospace engineering. As a student-athlete, she was a member of the inaugural women’s swimming and diving team, recording several program top-10 times in her career, while also competing in the 400m and 800m in track.Aileen Morales is the head coach of the Georgia Tech softball program. She is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Georgia Tech softball history. She remains Georgia Tech’s all-time leader in games played (265), starts (265), at-bats (850) and stolen bases (154) and ranks among the program’s top 10 in runs (second – 216), hits (third – 261), doubles (t-fifth – 43) and triples (t-fifth – 10). She also holds three of the top five single-season stolen base totals in school history, including a school-record 46 as a senior in 2008.Dianna Shelander is a retired principal geophysicist at Schlumberger in Houston, Texas. In 1973, Dianna Shelander became Georgia Tech's first female athlete to receive a varsity letter. Today, Georgia Tech has 7 women's team compete in the NCAA Division I athletics and the Football Bowl Subdivision.Runtime: 43:53 minutesOn June 23, 1972, Congress passed the landmark legislation of Title IX, forever changing the scope of women’s sports in the United States. As the 50th anniversary takes place in 2022, Georgia Tech athletics will celebrate the milestone all year long. On Friday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Georgia Tech hosted an all-female Title IX Panel featuring prominent Georgia Tech letterwinners and coaches as they share stories, experiences and advice over their athletic and professional careers. The panelists selected represent the last five decades of Georgia Tech athletics, ensuring a night of educational opportunity. Hear how their lives were impacted by Title IX and how athletics has shaped their professional endeavors – which range from law to public speaker to conference commissioner.
