Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) chronically colonises the airway of individuals with chronic respiratory disease, with persistence suggested to be facilitated by invasion of airway macrophages. Previous data supports an interaction between NTHi colonisation and the risk of viruses exacerbating underlying respiratory diseases.
