Adenosine deaminase and uric acid in feline lymphoma

Lymphomas represent a large and diverse group of neoplasms that originate from lymphocytes. These neoplasms usually occur in lymphoid tissues such as lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow. However, they can develop in almost any tissue in the body. Lymphoma is one of the most common neoplasms seen in domestic cats. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme with multiple functions in the organism. It has been implicated in the metabolism of purines, being responsible for catabolism of adenosine which will originate uric acid. In human and veterinary medicine, reports show that ADA increases in inflammatory, immune-mediated and neoplastic diseases. ADA has also been recognized as a marker of cell-mediated immunity and chronic inflammation. Uric acid is the final product of the purine’s pathway, it can be found in cells, tissues and is a very important nonenzymatic antioxidant. This study aimed to investigate was to investigate the serum activity of ADA and uric acid in cats with lymphoma. For that purpose, serum concentrations of ADA and uric acid were determined in the serum of 30 cats with lymphoma at diagnosis and prior to therapy, and in serum of 20 healthy control cats. The lymphoma group was composed mainly by domestic short-hair (DSH) cats, with ages ranging from 0.5 to 17 years and with lymphomas in different anatomical locations, and in different clinical stages. Cats from the control group were also mainly DSH, with ages ranging from 2 to 13 years. Cats with lymphoma presented serum concentrations of ADA (median 29.52 U/L, IQR 18.98-62.38 U/L) and uric acid (median 0.23 mg/dL, IQR 0.15-0.34 mg/dL) significantly higher (P<0.001 in both cases) than healthy controls (ADA median 14.43 U/L, IQR 10.07-23.06 U/L; uric acid median 0.10 mg/dL, IQR 0.08-0.12 mg/dL). The results obtained in our study suggest that these analytes might be useful clinical biomarkers of diagnosis, for monitoring the evolution of the disease and the response to treatment and prognosis of feline lymphoma.Os Linfomas incluem um grupo diverso de neoplasias com origem em linfócitos. Estas neoplasias surgem frequentemente nos tecidos linfoides como os linfonodos, baço e medula óssea, no entanto pode surgir em qualquer outro tecido do organismo. Os linfomas são das neoplasias mais frequentes em gatos. (Cooley DM, 2003) A adenosina deaminase (ADA) é uma enzima com várias funções no organismo. Está envolvida no metabolismo das purinas sendo responsável pelo catabolismo da adenosina no qual origina o acido úrico. A sua atividade tem sido documentada em medicina humana e em medicina veterinária como um biomarcador da imunidade celular e inflamação crónica. Diferentes estudos relatam o aumento da sua atividade sérica em processos inflamatórios, doenças imunomediadas e em doenças neoplásicas. O acido úrico é o produto final do catabolismo das purinas, pode ser encontrado em células, tecidos e tem uma importante ação antioxidante não enzimática. Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a atividade sérica de ADA e ácido úrico em gatos com linfoma. Para isso, foram determinadas as concentrações séricas de ADA e ácido úrico de 30 gatos com linfoma no momento do diagnóstico e antes de iniciar terapia, e em 20 gatos aparentemente saudáveis. O grupo linfoma foi composto principalmente por gatos Europeu Comum, com idades compreendidas entre os 6 meses e os 17 anos, e com linfomas em diferentes localizações anatómicas, e em diferentes estadios clínicos. Os gatos do grupo controlo eram maioritariamente da raça Europeu Comum, com idades entre os 2 e os 13 anos.
