In the article the author presents an overview of the military librarianship development from the Stanislaw August times and the establishment of the School of Chivalry – Corps of Cadet until the interwar period. The author focuses mainly on the social role of military libraries – designed to provide knowledge, but also to participate in the work on the formation of a soldier-citizen, understanding the meaning of his service and struggle as well as the citizen obligations towards the Homeland.W swoim artykule autor przedstawia zarys rozwoju bibliotekarstwa wojskowego od czasów stanisławowskich i powołania Szkoły Rycerskiej – Korpusu Kadetów do okresu dwudziestolecia międzywojennego. Autor koncentruje się głównie na roli społecznej bibliotek wojskowych – mających za zadanie dostarczać wiedzy, ale również uczestniczyć w pracy nad ukształtowaniem żołnierza – obywatela, rozumiejącego sens swojej służby i walki oraz obowiązki obywatela wobec Ojczyzny
