Article 1 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities sets out its purposes, one of which is to respect the inherent dignity of people with disorders of the structure and/or function of the body. Human dignity is independent from bio-psychosocial properties of human beings that decise about their biological, mental or social functioning. Thus, all people — even those with the most severe disabilities are endowed with human dignity. Dignity is the source of human rights; therefore all action aiming at full enjoyment of those rights by people with disabilities are an expression of their humanity.
