Poisons in Roman Veterinary Medicine: The Use of Plants from the Papaveraceae and Solanaceae Families

W weterynarii antycznej, podobnie jak w medycynie, stosowano rośliny z rodzin makowatych i psiankowatych. Weterynarze używali przede wszystkim opium oraz lulka czarnego, którymi leczyli choroby układu oddechowego, krwiomocz, podagrę i insanię. Substancje były wykorzystywane rzadziej niż w medycynie, co wiązało się z różnicami w chorobach zwierząt i ludzi. Sporadycznie w kuracjach weterynaryjnych stosowano glistnik jaskółcze ziele, pokrzyk wilczą jagodę, mandragorę i psiankę czarną. The then veterinarians mainly used opium and henbane to treat respiratory diseases, haematuria, gout and insania (mental disease). These substances, however, were used less frequently than in human medicine due to the differences in animal and human diseases. Occasionally, buttercup, wolfsbane, mandrake and black nightshade were used in veterinary treatments.
