A suitable variational principle allows to study both the geodesic connectedness and the existence of periodic trajectories in a class of Gödel type spacetimes. A unified study of these two problems, with some technical improvements of a previous work, is carried out. On the contrary, a direct approach needs for the classical Gödel Universe
