Collection : Textes clésSince Georges Canguilhem's famous essay on the normal and the pathological, first published in 1943, whose goal was among other things to clarify the concepts of health and disease, a vast philosophical English literature has addressed the definition of these concepts and the analysis of their status. The most important debate in this emerging field, philosophy of medicine, concerns the question: can health and disease be described as natural phenomena or are they value-laden conditions? All the texts in this anthology have taken a important part in this controversy. In the first section, disease as a biological concept is presented as the most important component of these notions. In the second part, health is defined first and foremost after the notion of action. The last section gathers contributions questioning the very necessity, or possibility, of defining these concepts.Depuis le célèbre essai de Georges Canguilhem sur le normal et le pathologique publié initialement en 1943 et dont l'un des objectifs était la clarification des concepts de santé et de maladie, une littérature philosophique abondante, principalement anglo- saxonne, s'est attachée à définir ces concepts et à analyser leur statut. Le principal débat de ce domaine émergeant de la philosophie de la médecine porte sur la question : peut-on décrire la santé et la malaide comme des phénomènes naturels ou s'agit-il d'états qui sont déterminés par des valeurs? Tous les textes présentés dans ce volume ont participé de cette controverse. Ceux de la première section, traitant de la maladie, accordent une part importante à la composante biologique. Ceux de la seconde, dans leur définition de la santé, donnent le primat à la notion d'action. La dernière section s'interroge sur la nécessité même de définir les deux concepts
