Représenter les dynamiques urbaines de Tours antique et médiéval

ToToPI, for Topography of Tours Pre-Industrial, is a GIS for studying of the city of Tours (France) in large time span. The aim of this paper is to explain how GIS is used for historical data processing to understand time-space dynamics. The proposed principle for understanding the urban dynamic is based on considering the town as a set of complex objects, taking a systemic approach. The town system used to study the urban fabric over large time spans is composed of three sub-systems relating to historical objects from the level of the excavation to that of the former urban space: function (social use), space (location, surface area and morphology) and time (dating, duration and chronology). The historical object is the analytical unit of the space studied. It is the Cartesian product of the three sets, Social use, Space and Time, from which it stems. The OH_FET model is based of this process. The Historical Object (OH) is broken down into three types of simple object, functional (EF), spatial (ES) and temporal (ET). The relationships between these three sets each characterize an interaction (social use-space, social use-time, time-space, or function-space-time). In addition to reconstructing the OH, they allow urban changes to be observed by analyzing the distributions and mapping of each of the entities singly or two-by-two. The originality of this procedure lies in its approach whereby it is possible to start not from the mapping of a phenomenon at a time t1 and comparing it to that at a time t2, but to look at it in the same way whether its input is social use, space or time. The heuristic value of this modelling lies in the shift from description (what, where, when) to understanding the phenomena of change (how, why). The Implementation of OH_FET model in ToToPI, with classical GIS software (ArcGIS from ESRI), makes possible on one hand the analysis of data sets in large time span and on the other hand the creation of new analyses (and of new products which result from it as the temporal mappings).ToToPI, pour Topographie de Tours Pré-Industriel, est une application SIG pour l'étude de la ville de Tours dans la longue durée. L'objectif de cette présentation est de montrer comment le l'utilisation des SIG pour le traitement des données de topographie historique est utile à leur représentation et à la compréhension des processus spatio-temporels. Le principe de compréhension de l'espace urbain proposé consiste à aborder la ville comme un ensemble d'objets complexes selon une approche systémique. Le système ville considéré pour étudier la fabrique de la ville dans la longue durée est constitué de trois sous-systèmes dont relèvent les objets historiques de l'échelle de la fouille à celle de l'espace urbanisé ancien : fonctionnel (usage social), spatial (localisation, étendue et morphologie) et temporel (datation, durée et chronologie). L'objet historique constitue l'unité analytique de l'espace étudié. Il est le produit cartésien des trois ensembles Fonction, Espace, Temps dont il est issu. Le modèle OH_FET est fondé sur ce processus ; l'Objet Historique (OH) est déstructuré en trois types d'objets simples, l'entité fonctionnelle (EF), l'entité spatiale (ES) et l'entité temporelle (ET). - L'approche thématique de l'OH en milieu urbain est fonctionnelle, organisée selon un thésaurus hiérarchisé. - L'espace, ensemble le plus formalisé des trois, est structuré sur le modèle d'un graphe planaire topologique sans isthme. - Le temps, toujours considéré comme continu et linéaire, sera modélisé par analogie à l'espace en utilisant la topologie temporelle définie en intelligence artificielle. Les associations entre les trois ensembles caractérisent chacune une interaction (fonction-espace, fonction-temps, espace-temps ou encore fonction-espace-temps). Elles permettent, au-delà de la reconstruction de l'OH, l'observation des transformations urbaines par l'analyse des distributions et de la cartographie de chacune des entités seule ou deux à deux. L'originalité de la démarche réside dans une approche qui permet de ne pas partir de la cartographie d'un phénomène à un temps t1 et de la comparer à celle d'un temps t2 mais de l'aborder indifféremment selon une entrée fonctionnelle, spatiale ou temporelle. La valeur heuristique de cette modélisation réside dans le passage de la description (quoi, où, quand) à la compréhension des phénomènes de transformation (comment, pourquoi). L'implémentation du modèle OH_FET dans ToToPI à l'aide de logiciel du commerce (ArcGIS) sous la forme d'une géodatabase, permet d'une part l'analyse des données dans la longue durée, d'autre part de nouvelles approches et représentation des phénomènes temporels
