Clinical Performance of Post-Extraction Wide Implants: Preliminary results.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the success rate and the peri-implant bone resorption of a new wide implant (Duravit-inn Wide, B&B Dental Implant Comapny S.r.l., Bologna, Italy), used for immediate implant, at 1 year follow-up. Method: 20 implants were placed in post-extraction socket in molar and premolar region. All patient were suitable for oral surgery. The extraction of the tooth was made in the most conservative way. The drilling of the bone left an underprepared site to position the implant. After implant placement, the flap was sutured with 4-0 non-adsorbable sutures. All implants underwent transmucosal healing for 4 months before prosthodontic stage. All patients received a standard post-surgical and maintenance protocol. Periapical radiographs were taken immediately after implant placement, at the prosthetic phase, and at 1-year follow-up. All implants supports a screw-retained single-crown prosthesis. Result: Out of 20 implant placed only 1 did not achieve osseointegration. The average survival rate was 95%. Average marginal bone loss was 0.68±0.17mm at 1 year follow-up. All prosthetic rehabilitations were successful and in function. Conclusion: With the limits of this preliminary study the placement of immediate implants in molar and premolar sites seems to be reliable. Survival rate and peri-implant bone resorption is comparable with those of immediate-delayed and delayed implant placement. Further observation with long-term follow-up may confirm these preliminary data
