With the increased number of new measures approved each year, the European Union (EU) is aspiring towards a myriad of actions for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy sources. The space heating and domestic hot water energy demand of buildings dominates the total energy use in the EU with a share of more than 20%. Moreover, the majority of the buildings are constructed before the introduction of energy saving policies. To refurbish these buildings large investments are necessary.
