Rinascimento italiano e modernità europea : il nazionalismo culturale di Gabriele d'Annunzio tra storia, politica e letteratura

This dissertation participates in the on-going reconsideration of the Italian author and political activist Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938) following a period of hostile critical dismissal grounded in political and moral prejudices. This critical tradition fails to acknowledge the relevance of the author’s reflection on Italian and European modernity within the intellectual debate of the long 19th century. My work fills this gap by discussing a twofold theme: d’Annunzio’s reflection on the Italian Renaissance and on the Italian nation. More specifically, I focus on the author’s cultural nationalism and the myth of the nation he created through his interpretation of the Renaissance. My research indicates that d’Annunzio tried to improve his own image and that of Italy through the myth of a New Renaissance, a project of literary and national regeneration based on the rediscovery of the humanistic, vitalist and aesthetic values of the Italian Renaissance. These values of the national tradition formed the foundation of d’Annunzio’s cultural nationalism, which responded to the spiritual and community crisis – briefly: the decadence ¬– of Italian and European modernity: fin-de-siècle citizens searched for new ways to structure their daily actions and d’Annunzio met this need through a religion of the fatherland. The author constructed an idea of Italy as a country that must achieve its historical greatness and he increased the national spirit with a range of references to the Italian Renaissance in his novels, essays and speeches. The valorisation of the Renaissance as a positive force of Italian identity rejected the 19th-century Italian readings of the period in terms of decadence. Moreover, d’Annunzio’s interpretation of the Renaissance radically differed from the paradigm constructed during the Risorgimento and the first decades after Italian unification: whereas a significant part of the Italian intellectuals tried to “shame” Italian citizens into self-improvement or to regenerate them with foreign models of behaviour, d’Annunzio, on the contrary, offered an alternative path to regeneration through his eulogy of the exceptional Italians of the Renaissance. Their vitality, discipline and firmness, he felt, constituted a model that should be emulated by Italian citizens to achieve national rebirth. d’Annunzio’s activism, which was not limited to Italy, also participated in a pan-European reflection: he turned to the Renaissance to fashion Italy a place at the centre of European intellectual discourse. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Italy was subject to orientalising readings that characterized the nation as irrational and backward. This discourse was developed by Northern writers who discussed Italy’s backwardness in opposition to their own rational progressive cultures and who defined the Protestant Reformation as the founding moment of European modernity. d’Annunzio reacted against this paradigm through the valorisation of Renaissance Humanism as the basis of the modern liberty of spirit. Hence, my analysis shows that d’Annunzio’s interpretation of the Renaissance also became a strategy of legitimation in European culture and politics, which led the author to endorse the idea of a regenerative war that should renew European modernity and produce a new Europe led by Italy and inspired by the traditional values of its genius.Dit proefschrift neemt deel aan de kritische herziening van de Italiaanse auteur en politieke activist Gabriele d’Annunzio (1863-1938) na een decennialange periode waarin de studie van zijn oeuvre geconditioneerd werd door politieke en morele vooroordelen. Deze kritische traditie miskent de relevantie van de auteurs reflecties over de Italiaanse en Europese moderniteit in de context van het intellectuele debat van de lange 19de eeuw. Mijn werk komt tegemoet aan die kritische lacune en bespreekt een tweeledig thema: d’Annunzio’s reflectie over de Italiaanse Renaissance en over de Italiaanse natie. Meer bepaald focus ik op d’Annunzio’s culturele nationalisme, ofwel op de mythe van de natie die hij creëert doorheen zijn interpretatie van de Renaissance. Mijn onderzoek toont aan dat de auteur zijn eigen imago en dat van Italië probeert te verbeteren doorheen de mythe van een Nieuwe Renaissance, een project van literaire en nationale wedergeboorte dat gebaseerd is op de valorisatie van de humanistische, vitalistische en esthetische waarden van de Italiaanse Renaissance. Deze waarden van de nationale traditie vormen de basis voor het cultureel nationalisme van de schrijver dat reageert op de spirituele en maatschappelijke crisis – of kortweg: de decadentie – van de Italiaanse en Europese moderniteit: de fin-de-siècle mens is op zoek naar een houvast voor zijn dagelijks handelen en d’Annunzio komt hieraan tegemoet met een religie van het vaderland. De auteur construeert een idee van Italië als een land dat haar eigen historische grootsheid dient waar te maken en hij versterkt het nationale gevoel met een scala aan verwijzingen naar de Italiaanse Renaissance. De valorisatie van de Renaissance als een kernonderdeel van de Italiaanse identiteit countert de 19de-eeuwse Italiaanse lezingen van de Renaissance als een periode van verval en decadentie. d’Annunzio’s interpretatie van de Renaissance verschilt bovendien radicaal van het paradigma dat geconstrueerd wordt tijdens het Risorgimento en de eerste decennia na de Italiaanse eenmaking in 1861. Wanneer een aanzienlijk deel van de intellectuelen de Italiaanse burgers probeert te “beschamen” tot zelfverbetering of hen tracht te regenereren aan de hand van buitenlandse gedragsmodellen, biedt d’Annunzio een alternatief door zijn lofzang op de exceptionele Italianen van de Renaissance. Hun vitaliteit, discipline en slagvaardigheid vormen een model dat nagestreefd dient te worden door de Italiaanse burger met het oog op de nationale wedergeboorte. d’Annunzio’s activisme beperkt zich niet tot Italië, maar participeert ook in een pan-Europese reflectie: de auteur gebruikt de Renaissance om Italië in het centrum van het Europese intellectuele discours te plaatsen. Italië was namelijk het slachtoffer van oriëntaliserende lezingen die de natie karakteriseren als irrationeel en achtergesteld. Dit discours werd ontwikkeld door Noord-Europese schrijvers die Italië gebruiken om hun eigen rationele en progressieve culturen te definiëren en die de Protestante Reformatie als het stichtende moment van de Europese moderniteit zien. d’Annunzio reageert tegen dit paradigma door het Renaissance humanisme te valoriseren als de basis voor de moderne vrijheid van geest. Mijn analyse toont dus aan dat de aandacht voor de Renaissance ook een legitimatiestrategie is in de Europese cultuur en politiek. Dit motiveert de auteurs geloof in een regeneratieve oorlog die de Europese moderniteit herstelt en een nieuw Europa doet ontstaan dat geleid wordt door Italië en dat geïnspireerd is door de traditionele waarden van haar genie
