There are mounting imperatives for the VET sector to be more responsive to the training needs of older learners and workers. There has been a steady growth in people over 45 years of age undertaking training through the VET system, as well as, labour market trends which show that the incidence of long term unemployment forpeople over 45 years of age is higher than for those who are younger and that reemployment for this group is more difficult. This coupled with the pressures of an aging population and workplace changes brought about by the new knowledge economy requires a re-thinking and reframing of VET sector practice, which will ensure greater engagement of this group.
