Informal sources of support are an important point of contact for victims of violent crimes, including sexual abuse. Family members and friends form a significant part of an individual’s informal social support network and are therefore often the first point of contact for help-seeking victims. While sexual violence is overall underreported, family members and friends are more likely to learn about the sexual victimization of a person known to them, including children and adult family members and friends, than any other formal or informal source of support.
