The effect was studied of water vapor pressure on the shifting of the x-ray basal reflection d001 of montmorillonite [1318-93-0] as a function of the content of (Ca + Mg) and (Na + K) cations in the interlayer sheet. The ratio [(Na + K)/(Ca + Mg)] = 1/3, behaves as a limiting value; at this ratio 1/3 as though they were monovalent cations
