The formation of squat defects on the rails has been a major concern to various rail networks throughout the world. Current inspection methods only allow for the squats to be found after the cracks have progressed to a significant depth below the rail surface. This paper details a method for the early detection of squats on the rails using Eddy Current Non-Destructive inspection technique. The method aims at detecting the presence of the squat initiating factors on the rail surface before they have developed into a crack of significant depth which constitutes the squat
