Manganese (Mn) is a naturally-occurring element found in rock, soil and water. In the aquatic environment, manganese mainly exists in two forms: Mn(II) and Mn(IV). Oxidation and reduction reactions convert these species, and may be abiotically or microbially mediated. Currently there is no appropriate measured rate constant for the calculation of manganese half-life within subtropical estuaries, though a recommended half-life of 28 days for Mn(II) has been suggested for use. Uptake of manganese by biota significantly increases with temperature and with decreasing salinity, whereas a decrease in toxicity is generally observed with increasing pH.
