In this research an attempt has been made to design distance relays as per protection system requirements. This is achieved by using an Inductive learning technique. The inductive learning algorithm which belongs to the family of machine learning by examples is used to convert a set of impedance values into a decision tree. The impedance values are obtained by conducting fault study on the system to be protected. A number of tests have been carried out on various transmission line configurations. The required software for generating thedecision tree has been developed.</div
