Düşük sıcaklık soğutma uygulamalarında, sistemin verimini artırmanın bir yolu da kaskad soğutma sistemleridir. Bu sistemlerde alçak sıcaklık devresi ve yüksek sıcaklık devresi olarak adlandırılan iki soğutma çevrimi bir arada kullanılmaktadır. Her devredeki soğutucu akışkan kendisi için uygun sıcaklık sınırları arasında çalışarak kaskad devresi gerçekleşir. Son yıllarda alçak sıcaklık devresi için karbondioksit gazı önem kazanmaya başlamıştır.
