Epiphany in dubliners by james joyce

One of the most influential writers, Irish author James Joyce uses some techniques that put him into avant-garde. Apart from his stream of conscious technique in the form of interior monologues, epiphany, as the subject of this thesis, makes him unique in the world of fiction because he engraves his epiphanies with his artistic comprehension. This thesis discusses in detail the epiphanies used in Dubliners by James Joyce, which is comprised of 15 short stories, following the attempt to define and provide acceptance of the term from within the contribution of both literary theoreticians and practitioners. In doing so, a critical endeavour is reified and sustained by the methodological system. Besides, comparative approach and thematology are applied in an attempt to detail the short stories. Comparative approach is applied due to the fact that they are sequenced or transitive stories although these stories seem to be separated from each other at first glance. Apart from epiphanies used in the stories, paralysis is examined as it is prevalent from the first story to the last one. Moreover; James Joyce’s use of paralysis is not only confined to the loss of ability to move but also the paralysis leads to obliteration of senses. A table which summaries aspects of the condition of modern man, aspects of paralysis, the type of epiphanization and the acquired understanding is given in the conclusion part.En itibarlı yazarlardan biri olarak kabul gören İrlandalı yazar James Joyce, kendisini yenilikçi kılan bazı teknikler kullanmaktadır. James Joyce, iç monolog şeklinde kullandığı bilinç akış yöntemi dışında bu tezin de konusu olan sanatsal kavrayış ile işlediği epifan ile edebiyat dünyasında çok özel bir yer bulur. Bu tezde, edebiyat çalışmalarında epifana hem teorik hem de pratik anlamda yapılmış olan katkılar ile birlikte terimin ortaya çıkışının ve kabul görüşünün işlenmesinde sonra James Joyce’un Dublinliler adlı on beş adet kısa hikayeden oluşan kitabında kullandığı epifanlar tartışılmıştır. Bunu gerçekleştirirken yöntem olarak eleştirel bir çaba benimsenmiş ve uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca kısa hikayeleri incelerken karşılaştırmalı ve tematik yaklaşımlardan yararlanılmıştır. Karşılaştırmalı yaklaşım, hikayeler ilk bakışta bir birinden farklı hikayeler gözükse de aslında hikayelerin birbirinin devamı ve geçişken olma özelliklerinden ötürü uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca hikayelerde kullanılan epifan öğelerinin haricinde ilk hikayeden sonuncusuna yaygın olarak kullanılan felç durumları incelenmiştir. James Joyce’un kullanmış olduğu felç sadece bildiğimiz anlamda hareket kısıtlılığı ile sınırlanmamış, terimin kullanımını duyuların körleşmesi/felce uğramasına vardırmıştır. Tezin sonuç bölümünde çağdaş insanın durumunun safhalarının, felç durumunun, epifan türünün ve neyin kavrandığının gösterildiği bir tablo sunulmuştur
