The critical and research works written in Urdu do discuss the characters in a novel, their types and characterisation but these works mostly remain confined to a limited sphere and many writers just repeat what the earlier works have discussed. This article analyses the types of characters and the importance of characterisation with reference to some critical works written in English. It also applies those definitions and views on Urdu novels and the characters depicted in them.
