Los dilemas de la adaptación

This text argues that in the present experience of the indigenous peoples of Paraguay there are dilemmas to adapting satisfactorily to contemporary living conditions. The first is related with the image presented by the national press that presents an ideal (and legitimate) way of being indigenous, which is opposed to a model that should be avoided. The second deals with the continuity and discontinuity regarding the tradition that exists among the indigenous peoples of Paraguay, with a continuity in various aspects with the traditional economy and on the other hand with the need to generate money. The third situation deals with the existence of a kind of decision by which some individuals decides, opting for apparently advantageous options that contain unforeseen disadvantages. The fourth situation presented refers to the dichotomy between the vision that certain individuals of the national society have that affirm that indigenous peoples who “live like us are no longer indigenous peoples”, and on the other hand the will to adapt to the modern world that individuals belonging to indigenous peoples in Paraguay have.El presente texto plantea que en la vivencia de los pueblos indígenas del Paraguay en la actualidad se dan dilemas a la hora de adaptarse satisfactoriamente a las condiciones de vida contemporáneas. El primero tiene que ver con la imagen presentada por la prensa nacional sobre la existencia de una forma ideal (y legítima) de ser indígenas en contraposición a un modelo negativo que debe ser cambiado. El segundo trata sobre la continuidad y discontinuidad con respecto a la tradición que existe entre los pueblos indígenas del Paraguay, en donde se da una continuidad en varios aspectos con la economía tradicional y por otro lado se cuenta con la necesidad de generar dinero. La tercera situación trata sobre la existencia de un cálculo por el cual los indígenas toman decisiones, optando por opciones aparentemente ventajosas que encierran desventajas no contempladas. La cuarta situación presentada se refiere a la dicotomía entre la visión de ciertos individuos de la sociedad nacional que afirman que aquellos indígenas que «viven como nosotros ya no son más indígenas» y, por otro lado, la voluntad de adaptación al mundo moderno que poseen los individuos pertenecientes a los pueblos indígenas en el Paraguay
