Economic analysis of impact and benefits of mgnrega in soolaivaikal panchayat, Thoothukudi District

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was introduced with an aim of improving the purchasing power of the rural people. It is a historical step taken to provide guaranteed employment to the rural people. Providing employment to the rural person is the main objective of this Act. It provides different types of employment programmes like NREP, RLEGP, EAS, JGSY, JRY, MGNREGP etc. The scheme provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of employment in every financial year to adult members of any rural household willing to do public work-related unskilled manual work at the statutory minimum wage per day. The Act guarantees that if work is not provided within a 15-days period than the applicant is eligible for unemployment allowance. Work to be done is decided by the Gram panchayat. In this study area majority of the rural people are suffering more about the unemployment problem. So, this study analyses the MGNREGA scheme and how this scheme helps in employment to thousand of unemployed rural people and poverty alleviation.
