Purpose of reviewNeurosteroids are a family of compounds synthesized directly in the brain bytransforming cholesterol into pregnenolone, which is then converted to compoundssuch as allopregnanolone and allotetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone. In view of their abilityto modulate neurotransmission, neurosteroids may influence the clinical course ofepileptic disorders.
