his dissertation focuses on a relatively underrepresented group of the fishing industry: subsistence fisherfolk. By using a Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) and Community Capitals Framework (CCF) as a theoretical framework and interpretive lens, the purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the impact of socio-economic and institutional factors on the livelihoods of artisanal fisherfolk of Korsten, Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth). By highlighting the socio-spatial implications of the forced removals of the past, this dissertation shows that legislative reforms should consider the population that they affect.
