The sphingomyelin pathway is an ubiquitous, evolutionary conserved signaling system which transduces an extracellular signal into the cell. During the past few years increasing evidence has shown that the sphingolipid ceramide may play a role as a second messenger in intracellular signal transduction. The ceramide generation via sphingomyelinase (SMase) is followed by three major cellular responses: cell growth arrest, induction of cell differentiation and/or induction of programmed cell death or apoptosis.
