Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), a family of chemical compounds formed during incomplete combustion or in high-temperature pyrolytic processes involving fossil fuels, are deposited in aquatic sediment from a variety of sources. The hydrophobic nature of these tracer compounds provides a good understanding of their transport in the environment. Parent PAH ratios and principal component analysis-multiple regression models can be used to apportion the sources of sediment PAHs. These tools were tested for 12 USEPA priority PAHs measured from the sediment samples of two adjacent aquatic environments, the Gulf of Gemlik and Lake Iznik.
