Throughout the history of Western thought, binary oppositions create hierarchies. As a result, the hierarchical power relations originate in opposite categories such as normal/abnormal, female/male, homosexual/heterosexual, cisgender/transgender, etc. In the Deleuzian branch of queer theory, providing a flat ontology for any kind of category is what is desired. When transgressions between the opposite categories happen without labeling the poles of binary oppositions as better or worse, both the superior and the inferior lose their positions and are repositioned.
