Il periodo sismico, iniziato nel 1783 e durato tre anni nella Calabria meridionale, causò danni enormi: più di 35.000 vittime e rilevanti sconvolgimenti dell’assetto idrogeologico del territorio. Il governo Borbonico diede immediato avvio alla ricostruzione delle provincie più arretrate, tentando di riorganizzare i sistemi amministrativi ed economici con criteri innovativi e attraverso la costruzione con tecniche anti-sismiche.
