Confrontação com o País de Origem e Redefinição das Identificações: Descendentes de Migrantes Portugueses no Contexto Intraeuropeu (França-Portugal)

Abstract. This article analyzes the ways in which the self-identifications of Portuguese migrants’ descendants in France are redefined throughout their life cycle and their travels back and forth between their country of origin and France. This study of second-generation Luso-descendants is based on ethnographic data collected between 2000 and 2006 in both France and Portugal through a survey of forty-eight young binationals, the majority of whom have a bachelor’s degree. The study reveals the extent to which the transnationalism (broadly defined) of the second-generation is connected to their family’s migration project focused on returning to the village of origin, on transgenerational solidarity, and on a certain endogamy, as well as on considerable spatial mobility in an intraeuropean context. In the early 2000s, this mobility between the country of origin and the country of settlement was partly due to European Union policies of student mobility, but also to the Portuguese state’s diaspora policy for Luso-descendants. The life experiences of these Luso-descendants constitute a new and rewarding identification resource to counter the invisibility and the “double devaluation,” both social and cultural, of Portuguese immigrants in French society.Resumo. O artigo analisa a maneira como, ao longo do ciclo da vida e das idas e voltas entre país de origem e país de instalação, as autoidentificações dos descendentes de migrantes portugueses de França se redefinem. Com base em materiais etnográficos recolhidos entre 2000 e 2006 em França e em Portugal, junto de quarenta e oito jovens binacionais, maioritariamente diplomados do ensino superior, o estudo demonstra a que ponto o transnacionalismo (no sentido lato) da segunda geração se prende com o projeto migratório familiar, centrado no regresso à aldeia de origem, nas solidariedades transgeracionais e numa relativa endogamia, mas também numa forte mobilidade espacial no contexto intraeuropeu. Esta mobilidade entre países de instalação e de origem observada em meados dos anos 2000 resulta parcialmente da política europeia para incrementar a circulação estudantil, mas também da política diaspórica do Estado português direcionada para os lusodescendentes, da qual a narrativa constituiu uma fonte identitária inédita e valorizante, face à invisibilidade e à dupla desvalorização, social e cultural, da imigração portuguesa na sociedade francesa
