The Labor Problems during the Victorian Era as Reflected in the North and South, a Novel Written by Elizabeth Gaskell

This research analyzed a novel entitled North and South written by Elizabeth Gaskell. The issue is about the labor problems during the Victorian Era. The theory used in this research was a mimetic theory by Meyer Howard Abram and supported by a sociological approach. After analyzing the North and South novel, the writer found three labor problems that occurred during the Victorian era: poverty, health problems, and unjust treatment of the laborers. The writer also found that poverty was caused by low wages given to the laborers, health problems caused by poor work safety and air pollution, and unjust treatment towards the laborers caused by the absence of a law that regulates employment issues
